GLOSSARY

SEED

Cut flowers started from seed are the cornerstone of most growers’ programs – the tried-and-true, as well as some of the most diverse. Seed could be raw, pelleted, coated, or primed.

Varieties that can be direct-sown in the field: Amaranthus, Bells of Ireland, Calendula, Centaurea, Cosmos, Larkspur, Marigold, Sunflower, Sweet Peas, Zinnia.

UNROOTED CUTTING

These vegetative plant segments are clipped from mother stock and will ultimately grow into a full plant. URCs have not been stuck in soil to generate a root base. These cuttings are propagated and grown into a tray as a liner and then a finished plant.

Varieties offered in URC: Agastache, Chrysanthemum, Craspedia, Dahlia, Poinsettia, Gypsophila

PLUG

Also known as “plug trays” or “flats”, this term refers to trays of small plants or seedlings that are shipped to customers in boxes or cases. The grower will then transplant them to grow into finished product.

Varieties offered as plugs: Many classes! Contact your Ball ColorLink or Sales Representative for details on tray sizes and options.

LINER

When cuttings are rooted into their propagation media they then become Liners once they reach their full root base. They come in many sizes, with lower tray-size numbers representing larger-size liners and higher tray-size numbers representing smaller-sized liners.

Varieties offered as plugs: Many classes! Contact your Ball ColorLink or Sales Representative for details on tray sizes and options.

BULB

Bulbs are a storage structure where the plant stores all of its energy and grows from this form each flowering season.

Varieties offered as bulbs: Dahlia, Tulip, Allium, Amaryllis, Lily, Anemone, Calla, Ranunculus

TISSUE CULTURE (TC)

Sterile plant sections are grown in a laboratory in a special media (not soil) that promotes plant growth. A TC liner has been established from a tissue culture plant. There is an added cost to this process but plants are disease free.

Varieties offered as TC: Anigozanthos, Limonium, Echinacea, Heuchera

BARE ROOT

Part of a dormant perennial, which is dug from a field, washed to remove soil, packaged and shipped. Energy in the plant is stored in the root structure.

Varieties offered as Bare Root: Achillea, Agapanthus, Astilbe, Baptisia, Dahlia, Peony, Phlox, Sedum
