2024 Classic City Awards from UGA Trial Gardens
The University of Georgia Trial Garden Classic City Awards have been awarded for 2024. The UGA winners include two Ball Seed Exclusives from Ball FloraPlant and one from Darwin Perennials. These awards are reserved for the plants with the highest flowering, foliage, uniformity and resistance ratings for the entire season. Although many plants are spectacular for a given time, the Classic City Winners represent the best overall.
This season, UGA experienced a mild spring, a hot summer and minimal rainfall. As these were the perfect growing conditions June through July, the garden had lots to choose from and increased to 490 trials in all. Photos courtesy of University of Georgia Trials

Vining Mandevilla Tropica™ Grandiosa Rose Pink from Ball FloraPlant (Ball Seed Exclusive)
“The name says it all,” commented the judges. “This Mandevilla has gigantic flowers and an affinity for climbing.”
Agastache mexicana Summerlong™ Lilac from Darwin Perennials
This one is a “trifecta plant…Perennial, pollinator-friendly, and deer resistant!” said the judges. “They have great survival rates in clay beds and are very uniform overall.”
Ageratum Monarch Magic from Ball FloraPlant (Ball Seed Exclusive)
According to the judges, this one “provided show-stopping, densely packed blue flowers that attract butterflies and people alike.”
Petunia Supertunia® Tiara™ Blue from Proven Winners
The judges said, “This new beauty, Tiara Blue has both style and strength! Georgia summers are not easy on petunias late in the season, but the Supertunia seems to have the most vigorous root system that helps them survive into football season.”
Cuphea Cubano Presidente from Danziger
“This cuphea hybrid is 100% guaranteed to attract hummingbirds!” said the judges. “The plentiful orange tubular flowers are irresistible.”
