Award Winners Include Ball Seed at UGA Trial Gardens

The University of Georgia has announced this year’s UGA Plants of Distinction. This collection represents the plants in different categories that have received the best ratings through 100-degree temps, as well as long periods of inundating rain followed by months of drought. These plants also endure pathogens and pests that thrive in steamy weather and milder winters. The champions of July at the UGA Trial Gardens are listed below. Congratulations to:

Comments from the judges include, “Bursting with blue, and covered in monarchs and other butterflies!”

Dahlia Venti™ Magenta + White Eye from Selecta One

Judges were impressed with its heat tolerance in 100+ degree F weather. It also continued to flower with healthy blooms.

English Lavender SuperBlue from Darwin Perennials

“A challenging plant for our region,” commented the judges. But it proved to have excellent performance and fragrance!

Ornamental Millet Jade Princess from PanAmerican Seed

Judges said this variety had “wonderful performance in-ground and perfect size for a container thriller!”

Begonia Gryphon from PanAmerican Seed

According to the UGA judges, it was “easy to grow from seed, and versatile for landscape, containers, and indoors.”

Caladium ‘Celebration’ from Classic Caladiums (Proven Winners)

It had “enormous foliage and bold coloring! Fast grower,” said the judges.
